Many times if it is determined that a woman needs a surgical procedure to remove ovarian cysts, a laparoscopic ovarian cystectomy is the both the doctors and the patients preferred method. Opting to have a laparoscopy to remove the cyst, not only allows the patient to recover much quicker, but the risks involved are reduced, because it is a much less physically traumatic procedure. However, it is still an operation, and therefore there are risks involved.

Infection at the incision site is a risk in any surgery and laparoscopic procedures are no exception, although it is not as common as in conventional open surgery. Some risks that are specific to a laparoscopic ovarian cystectomy though, may be damage to either the bladder, bowel or blood vessels from inserting the laparoscope and other instruments. More and more surgeons are being trained to perform laparoscopies, therefore it is imperative that you find a qualified doctor who has successfully carried out a good number of previous procedures.

A woman has a much greater risk of complications occurring if she is smokes or if she drinks excessive amounts of alcoholic beverages. Being overweight will also increase the risk of complications. Using some prescription medications, as well as taking illegal drugs may also add to the risk factor that is involved. If a patient has had prior abdominal surgery or has had endometriosis, they should definitely discuss those issues with their physician before the laparoscopic ovarian cystectomy is scheduled.

Also, whenever general anesthesia is administered it presents a risk to the patient, many times they will experience nausea or possibly even flu like symptoms as a complication of the anesthesia.

Although Laparoscopic Ovarian Cystectomy is an option to eliminating ovarian cysts, it should certainly NOT be the first treatment considered. There are natural remedies that are quite effective and should be explored before any surgery is planned.
